Nanofood - MEPs to debate tougher scrutiny |

'Nanofood' doesn't sound incredibly tasty but the chances are that you have already eaten food produced using nanotechnology - the manipulation of materials one-millionth the size of a pinhead. It is increasingly used in additives, flouring or anti-bacterial ingredients for food. On Tuesday MEPs will debate a report from the Environment Committee that wants risk assessments nanofoods and calls for labelling if used. The report also rejects any use of food from cloned animals. |

Novel foods, MEPs set new rules |

|
In a legislative report dealing with an update of the EU rules on novel foods, the European Parliament calls on the Commission to interdict the placing on the market of food derived from cloned animals and their descendants. MEPs also want food being produced by nanotechnology processes to undergo a specific risk assessment before being approved for use and be labelled. The report was adopted with 658 votes in favour, 15 against and 11 abstentions. |

Public health - 24-04-2009 - 14:02 Parliament calls for the provision of information to consumers on the use of nanomaterials in consumer products: all ingredients present in the form of nanomaterials in substances, mixtures or articles should be clearly indicated in the labelling of the product (e.g. in the list of ingredients, the name of such ingredients should be followed by the word 'nano' in brackets) MEPs deplore the absence of a proper evaluation of the de facto application of the general provisions of Community law in the light of the actual nature of nanomaterials. |
